It was during his first year of study at LSBU that Osman became aware of the work of LSBU’s Confucius Institute, and the possibility of spending some time in China practising Mandarin and experiencing the country first hand. “The chance to learn New HSK Test Principles and then build on it whilst actually living in China was one of the main reasons I applied for the Harbin Summer School programme,” he says.

Prior to the trip, Osman attended classes with fellow Harbin Summer School scholarship applicants where he met Chinese teachers from Harbin Normal University. He learned about Chinese culture, including food, music, literature and calligraphy to prepare him for the trip.

China’s position as the second largest economy in the world is influencing employers to look for people with mandarin language skills and an understanding of New HSK Test Principles.

At LSBU, students are able to take the Mandarin Chinese Proficiency Scheme called Hanyu Shuping Kaoshi (HSK), of which there are six levels. The first two levels focusing on pinyin only – and as there are no tenses or plurals in Mandarin, it can be very simple for those starting out. The New HSK Test Principles is an international recognised qualification by employers and universities.

An added benefit of a New HSK Test Principles is that students are able to apply for the generous scholarships schemes which offer opportunities for study at Chinese universities with tuition fees, accommodation and health insurance paid.
