I have collected together and added English for some example sentences that demonstrate grammatical points for the HSK Level HSK 1, HSK 2, and HSK 3. These example sentences can also be downloaded as flashcard files for use in software such as Pleco and StickyStudy.

The excellent AllSet Learning Grammar Wiki has a page that classifies the grammatical points on the site into 6 levels. These seem to correspond roughly to the six HSK Level, so it would be a good idea to ensure you are familiar with the grammatical points in the appropriate levels.

The sample exams at the official HSK site chinesetest.cn has quite a few sample exams for each level; doing all of the exams is great practice at seeing the different ways grammatical points can occur.

Some other grammar books that I own that are useful but don’t have any information on the HSK  Level of each point specifically are: Basic Patterns of Chinese Grammar by Chen Ru, Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar by Claudia Ross, Schaum’s Outline of Chinese Grammar by Claudia Ross.

These sites don’t have much information on their suitability for HSK Level, but are a great resources:Chinese Grammar by Hugh Grigg (who also has an awesome blog), Oxford University’s grammar notes, and these basic review slides at Rutgers are a great way to start.

The HSK grammar books I have found tend to be focused on the ‘Old’ HSK, and so they might

not match the HSK Level too well. I have listed a few in case you are willing to try them (I haven’t) Practising HSK Grammar by Zhang Jing, Essentials of HSK Grammar by Zhao Jing, HSK Grammar by Fu Yuping, Brushing Up Your Grammar for HSK by Dong Cui, HSK Grammar Guidebook by Han Zhigang.

I would love to find some more good books and resources for studying Chinese grammar- let me know if you have any suggestions.

Here is how to pass the HSK TEST exam.

      1. Review. The HSK TEST exam is basically a test on everything you have learned. Look at old tests, notes, and attempt to remember what your teacher taught you.

      2. Find your weak points. Is there a certain subject in class that you weren’t the best in?

      3. Make your weak point a best point. Review and study that subject until you understand it.

      4. Study everything again. You don’t have to spend hours doing so, but make sure you have a fair understanding of the subjects.

      5. On the night before the exam, get a decent amount of sleep. If possible, try to sleep eight hours.

      6. Eat a healthy breakfast on the morning of the exam. (No cookie crisp today!) Try for scrambled eggs.

How to Pass HSK Test Exams-learn Chinese7. Arrive to the exam on time. Also make sure you dress appropriately. (Don’t come in wearing your pajamas, just something you would usually wear to school.) Be sure that you have something to write with. Usually, a pencil will not be provided for you.

If you have a difficult time choosing an appropriate outfit, do this the afternoon before the exam!

      8. Sit down, relax, and follow the instructions your mandarin teacher gives you.

      9. During the exam, try to remember what you studied, and what you were taught. If you get stuck on a question, move on to the next one. Then come back when you have the time. No cheating! Did you know in some places it’s illegal to cheat on a test this big? It’s still cheating if you give someone else the answers. If you don’t understand the question, you can ask the teacher for clarification, but don’t expect any hints.

      10. Use all your class time. If you’re done, check it. If you already checked it, check it again.

      11. When your mandarin teacher says time is up, stop and hand in your HSK test paper when the teacher instructs to do so.

      12. Quit reading this and start studying. Good luck!
