The verb 是 joins two phrases and expresses a relationship of identity between tow phrases.

我是学生。 I am a student. (wǒ shì xué shēng )

我的老师是中国人。My teacher is Chinese. (wǒ de lǎo shī shì zhōng guó rén )

In affirmative sentences, when Np2 refers to time , money ,or age, the 是 may be omitted.

      今天(是)8月29日。Today is August 29th. ( jīn tiān (shì )8 yuè 29 rì )

这支笔(是)5元钱。This pen is 5 Yuan.  (zhè zhī bǐ (shì )5 yuán qián )

是 may never be omitted in negated sentences. The negation of 是 is 不是。

      今天不是八月二十九日。

      这支笔不是5元钱。
