Various ways to say “Are you free” in Chinese

The common expressions and their uses in sentences

(Nǐ yǒu kòng ma?)

“你有空吗?” is a common and general way to ask if someone is free. It’s suitable for both formal and informal contexts. For a more casual and concise way, you can use “你空吗?(Nǐ kòng ma?)”, which is popular among friends.

e.g.

(Wǒ xiǎng hé nǐ liáo yì liáo, nǐ yǒu kòng ma?) I’d like to have a chat with you, are you free?

(Jīn wǎn nǐ yǒu kòng ma? Wǒmen yīqǐ qù kàn diànyǐng.) Are you free tonight? Let’s go watch a movie together.

(Míngtiān xiàwǔ nǐ kòng ma?) Are you free tomorrow afternoon?

(Nǐ zhè huìr yǒu kòng ma? Wǒ yǒu shì xiǎng wèn nǐ.) Are you free right now? I have something to ask you.

(Nǐ shénme shíhòu yǒu kòng? Wǒmen xūyào tǎolùn yíxià xīn xiàngmù.) When are you free? We need to discuss the new project.

(Nǐ yǒu shíjiān ma?)

This phrase is slightly more formal than “你有空吗?” and can be used in both personal and professional contexts to inquire about someone’s availability.

e.g.

(Xià zhōu nǐ yǒu shíjiān ma? Wǒmen xūyào kāi gè huì.) Are you available next week? We need to have a meeting.

(Wǒmen zhōumò qù lùyíng, nǐ yǒu shíjiān ma?) We’re going camping this weekend, do you have time?

(Xiàwǔ nǐ yǒu shíjiān ma? Chūlái hē gè kāfēi ba.) Are you free this afternoon? Let’s go out for a coffee.

(Fāngbiàn ma?)

Asking if it’s convenient for someone, implying if they are free or available for something. This can be seen as polite and considerate.

e.g.

(Wǎnshang gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà, fāngbiàn ma?) Would it be convenient for you to call me tonight?

(Wǒ xiǎng gēn nǐ yuē gè shíjiān miàntán, fāngbiàn ma?) I’d like to schedule a meeting with you, is that convenient?

(Nǐ shénme shíhòu fāngbiàn lái wǒmen gōngsī cānguān cānguān?) When would it be convenient for you to visit our company?
